Leckhampton Hill Nature Reserve, which is formed from jurassic limestone with rich flora and wild wildlife, set some 925 feet above sea level, provides stunning views for the town and the Severn Valley.
For years its been a place for walkers, with the Cotswold Way footpath crossing it, while the Devils Chimney is one of the most famous landmarks in the Cotswolds, made by the quarry men, who cut the stone for the fine Georgian buildings of near by Cheltenham.
The quarries set around the hill had their own railway to get the stone down, and were working until 1925. Today very little is left, with only the remains of kilns, workers cottages.
Set high above the town on top of the hill is a 400 acre common of grassland now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Also the site of Iron Age hill fort and long barrow.
